Carter Poised for a Big 2009 Season
While a lot of the local media's attention that covers the ITCL will focus on star quarterbacks from other schools, Jeremy Carter is a player that many coaches in the Lower Tier of the ITCL recognize as a very real  threat to score on every offensive play that the Wellsville Tigers run.  His impressive stats from 2008 showed that, and he is considered by many as one of the best athletes in the league, regardless of the offensive position.  In 2008 he rushed for over 500 yards and scored 8 touchdowns, while passing for another 400 with an addition 3 touchdowns.  Will his abilities and continued maturity as a quarterback lead the Tigers to a league title?  That will be learned in the weeks to come.
"Great athete," head coach Dave Skinner would concur.  "We always kind of hope early in a game, he gets hit. You'll see his head start going," Skinner said with a bobbing motion.  "It really lights him up.  I always say it brings the dog out of him.  Once we get that out of him early in the game, then he's good for the rest of the game.  He's quite a player."
Skinner would go on to talk about his star player as a legitimate threat to score on every play, "He's legit, both ways, he's very legit at safety for us also."  Skinner would add, "At any time he has his hand on the ball, and we tell him a lot on offense, if you see green, go."
Jeremy himself is trying to keep things in proper focus about his all-star label.  "I try not to think about it.  I try to stay as humble as I can, and play on Friday's trying to do what I do best."  He also recognizes that he needs to improve himself if he wants to lead the Tigers to a successful season.  "I mainly need to improve staying in the pocket some more, learn to read the defenses, read the safeties, and just be smart and try to make the good play."  A lot of people would consider Carter a running quarterback, but he doesn't neccessarily see himself in that regard.  "I try to base myself as a thrower, but in the offense we run, the spread, that is for mostly for running qb's, so I like to run the ball too."
He is also recognized around the league as a standout defensive back too.  "All yeah I like it a lot, playing safety.  You get to run the field, make good plays on the ball, get to it quick, and if it's there, grab it."  He recalled a 100-yard interception return last year, "I just said don't let them catch me, just run as fast as you can."
He would also talk about the goals of the Wellsville team for this 2009 campaign and possibly make the playoffs, "Yeah, it's a desire.  When we're down there in the weight room we talk about it.  We just work, work, work, work.  It takes hard work to get good, to be the best that you can be."
Jeremy also has a long line of blood heritage at Wellsville with numerous Carter's playing for the Tiger program over the years.  The pressure of continuing the tradition does not go un-noticed by Jeremy.  "A little bit, a little bit, but I don't pay much attention to it really.  I take a lot of pride in it.  I just try to be the best that I can be, and live up to my name."  That heritage also gives him some extra coaching, "All the time from my cousin Bo Carter, John Carter my cousin, Denny Carter he was the past qb, he took them to the states in 90 something.  So yeah I just try to be the best I can be."  If Jeremy continues to play as the best he can be, a lot of defensive co-ordinators will be pulling their hair out in 2009.
